Region 5 South Soaring Championships The 1997 Region 5 South Soaring Championships are being hosted by the Mid-Georgia Soaring Association (MGSA) at the Crisp County Airport, Cordele, Georgia - June 10 thru June 14, 1997. MGSA has hosted Regional and/or National contests at Cordele each year since 1970. The Crisp County Airport is a former U.S. Army Air Corps World War II airport with the usual three runway configuration for runways 9-27, 4-22, and 13-31. Runway 9-27 is the main and active runway, runway 4-22 is for other than normal operation, and runway 13-31 is a closed runway. The airport is used by numerous private and corporate aircraft as well as several agricultural spraying operations. Through vigilance and cooperation, the airport is never closed during glider operations. All launches and landings are conducted within the parameters of a normally operational airport with the glider operation using runways 4 and 22 while power traffic uses runways 9 and 27. Cordele is located in "Middle Georgia", 145 miles south of Atlanta, with farming and local industrial and manufacturing plants. In addition to the Region 5 Soaring Championships, MGSA is concurrently hosting the 1997 Standard Class National Soaring Championship from June 10 through June 19, 1997.
