Cicadas' e-song St-Auban, 29 June 1997 : Opening Day !!! Yesterday's practice tasks were finally cancelled, the weather being too poor, but some pilots flew free flights in order to complete their preparation for tomorrow's great day : 1st day of the Championships. Today's weather : Very cloudy in the morning, the weather improved rapidly and the Opening Ceremony took place between 11:00 and 02:30 under a bright sunshine only disturbed by fine-looking cumuluses ! Let's hope that it is a good outlook of what will prevail during the whole period of the championships... Alvaro de Orleans-Borbon, spanish pilot but acting as FAI representative, put accent on efforts to promote Soaring on media, saying that if God had wanted Man to fly, He would have provided him... more money. Mayor of Château-Arnoux-St-Auban, José Escanez, officially welcomed all the competitors ; on his side, Angela Sheard traducing his speech as other's into english as WGC interpreter. On the afternoon the Airshow took place with a great success and several thousand of people. Tomorrow's weather : for the first task of the contest, still cumuluses, with some thunderstorms expected in the afternoon on mountaneous areas. ---------------------------------------------------- Access provided by: Guenther Eichhorn | gei@cfa.harvard.edu Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA CPL,ASMELS,IA,Glider,CFI | Pitts S-2A: N1GE DC-3 type rating | Flying is the Pitts See: http://acro.harvard.edu/IAC and: http://acro.harvard.edu/SSA
