Other Info:
- The club operates at a field outside the small town of Pepperell,
  about 32 air miles NW of Boston's Logan airport, a stone's throw
  from the New Hampshire border. The field is at 200' MSL. We take
  off from the 2300' paved runway, and land on a parallel grass strip.
Club members are assigned to be Field Officers on a rotating basis;
  with over 85 club members, this typically works out to 1 day/year.
  At least 6 members form a Senior Field Officer corps, providing
  professional-quality field management, operations training, and
  co-ordination with other field activities.
- We run a full operation from April 1 through November 31, an average
  of about 80 flights per week. We operate through the winter depending
  on weather and interest.
- We lease field space from a fairly busy parachute-jumping operation, so
  have a lot of experience with that rather unusual situation. (The major
  issue is that the parachute jumpers must have exclusive use of at least
  2 cubic miles of airspace, upwind of the field. This grows to 4 or more
  cubic miles, on windier days.)
- One of the GBSC members operates a small commercial glider operation
  from the same field. "Captain Eli's Glider Rides" provides rides and
  instruction using a Blanik L-19 and a Schweizer 2-33, and weekday towing
  using a Piper Pawnee.
- Local conditions include convection most of the year, and weak wave in
  the spring, winter, and fall when the wind is coming from the direction
  of the mountains to our north or northwest. B-4 pilots, and club members
  in glass ships, routinely use local convection and wave for summer cross-
  country flights of over 5 hours and hundreds of miles.
- At least 6 club members are trained tow pilots; this number is increasing
  with time. The club provides tow training to qualified members at no charge.
- At least 10 club members are Certified Flight Instructors/Glider; they
  rotate weekend days, so each is "on duty" about one day every 5 weeks,
  but in practice several are available every weekend day, so the club
  handles more than one student at a time comfortably.
- The club also occasionally operates from Franconia airport in the White
  Mountains of New Hampshire (about 2 hours drive north), for ridge and
  mountain soaring. Traditionally, the club rents a 16-room inn there for
  two weekends and a week near the peak of the fall foliage season.
