In April/May 2022 I made a tour of the Balkans. The tour was organized by Zagreb Tours. It was originally planned for April 2020 but had to be postponed. They conducted the tour without extra cost in 2022. The organization was outstanding. I had two guides, each driving me for about half of the tour. Everything worked like clockwork. During the tour I wanted to put more emphasis on bird watching than originally planned. Both guides went out of their way to research bird watching sites during the tour and added visits to many bird watching sites.

Itinerary

Coming from Hrvatska (Croatia), we entered Montenegro near the mouth of the Bay of Kotor. Border formalities were fairly easy, no visa required for European Union citizens.

We drove along the northern shore of the Bay of Kotor to Risan. I saw a sign about Roman Floor Mosaics. My guide had never visited that museum, but I was interested. The mosaics were quite impressive, though not as mind boggling as the floor mosaics in the Villa Romana del Casale in Sicily. I am glad that we stopped there.

From Risan we continued to Perast. We hired a small boat for a trip to Our Lady of the Rocks, one of two small islands off Perast. It has a church from the 15th century, renovated in 1722. It has some nice paintings and a small museum.

From Perast we continued to Kotor, our only overnight stop. After checking into the hotel, we continued to drive up the mountain to the Mausoleum of Petar II Petrovic-Njegos. From there we continued down the other side of the mountain to Cetinje, the former royal capital of Montenegro. It has the official residence of the president of Montenegro.

From Cetinje we continued down the mountain to Budva on the coast, and then back to Kotor.

Kotor has a very nice fortified Old Town. My hotel was right in Old Town, within the fortified walls.

The next morning we did a walking tour of Old Town Kotor, before heading south. We stopped at the Solila Nature Reserve for some bird watching, before continuing to Budva. Budva has a nice Old Town.

From Budva we headed south along the coast to Shqipëri (Albania). Exit formalities were quick, no problems at all.

Observations

Montenegro is a nice country, from what I could see. It has very scenic areas. It is not quite as clean as Croatia and Slovenia, but cleaner than Albania.

Driving is a bit chaotic at times, but again not as bad as in Albania.

Food and drink was OK. In the hotel in Old Town Kotor it was a bit expensive, much more so than in the other countries in the Balkans.
