Tuesday (Day 6) was the best soaring day yet at the Sports Class Nationals in Albert Lea, Minnesota. The task called was a pilot option task with a minimum time of 3:30. The first turnpoint was St. James. (Every contest day so far has had the first turnpoint set so that the pilots could learn from one another before going their own ways.) St. James was the farthest first turnpoint so far at 63 miles from Albert Lea. Speeds were high and the points are very close! There were no landouts on Day 6.

Tom Gilbert (Libelle 201B) won the day with a speed of 61.13 mph and received 1001 points. Joe Owensby (HP-18) was a very close second with a speed of 61.09 mph and he received 1000 points for being the fastest American competitor. Joe is still holding on to first place, but only by 2 points! He has 5692 points and Tom Gilbert has 5690. Gene Hammond (ASW-20) was a very close third with a speed of 60.98 mph. Gene is in 4th place overall with 5400 points. Canadian Anthony Burton crossed the line in fourth place for the day in the Schreder RS-15 he built. Fifth place for the day went to Malcolm Stevenson in his ASK-21. Alfonso Jurado finished 7th for the day and is in 3rd place overall with 5499 points.
