Jim Payne, JP, won the first day followed closely by Jae Walker, JW. The early starters lead the pack. Practically all the slow speed contestants started late. Thermal strengths averaged 3 to 4 knots with strongest thermals to 6 knots. There were isolated 7- 8 knot thermals at the south most turnpoints to between 10,000 and 12,000 msl. However, Cumulus filled skies kept cruising altitudes mostly between 7000 to 8000msl. Late in the day, Scott Valley and weak thermals nearly trapped the late starters with 100-200fpm climb outs.
A gaggle of Discuses and my self (DG-300) flew south under clouds with Karl in the Genesis on the practice day. I believe the Genesis was loaded to 7.x lbs and the rest of us between 7.0 and 9.0 lbs. General impressions were that the Genesis very much held its own in climb and run. Although Karl finished the task on Day 1, he forgot to go to the next to last turnpoint.
